Koo-koo! Koo-koo!

Pat Robertson calls for the assasination of the democratically elected President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez. (link via Atrios)

Uh…

huh.

Just what does Pat Robertson have to do to get de-mainstreamed? Go on a meth-addled shooting spree in a mosque, fuck some of the corpses and then show the video of his rampage as a fundraiser on the 700 Club?

reminds me of a bit david cross does on his album – he talks about what it would take for bush to get people to see how nuts he is, and comes up with eating a jewish baby

Just yesterday, on my blog, I poked fun at Pat’s prayer vigil asking God to remove three more Supreme Court justices. Apparently Pat has decided that the Lord just isn’t reliable enough sometimes. The Lord, you know, helps those who help themselves.

I think it could be a new reality TV show:” 700 1/3:The Pat Robertson Fuck Yeah Club”

At this moment, Robertson is the top story on CNN.com. Also featured (if somewhat less prominently) at websites of New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and BBC. Maybe he’s de-mainstreamed himself at long last.

That’s good – at least it’s generating some controversy – but I’m guessing it will take more than this.

The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced that this isn’t about Hugo Chavez or Venezuelan oil at all.

Since Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor announced her retirement, Robinson has made a great show of his “prayer offensive” to open three more vacancies on the Supreme Court. Because the Constitution gives Supreme Court justices lifetime tenure, there are only three ways to create a vacancy: death, resignation or impeachment. On The 700 Club, Robinson said, “We ask for miracles on the Supreme Court.”

In the hard religious right, there are small but significant pockets of support for people who murder doctors and bomb clinics, and a handful of people willing to carry out such crimes. By advocating assassination, and by attempting to justify assassination even as he apologizes for mentioning it, I think Pat Robertson is trying to plant an idea in the minds of some of those people, while maintaining deniability for himself.

Eek. I kept saying Robinson. How embarrassing. I meant Robertson.

Does paranoia make people stupid?
