Flush
That sound you just heard was the president of the United States flushing the last of our national integrity down the drain by saying U.S. bonds are worthless.
And, as Marshall points out, that almost certainly violates his oath of office.
But, message received: Bush would rather the U.S. default on its loans than raise taxes on his rich friends.
Actually, even that's not true. He'd rather the U.S. default on its loans so he can dismantle a highly popular and succesful social program that keeps the elderly from dying in a cardboard box under an overpass.
Nice.

I'm sick of half of my check going to that FICA guy.

Having those currently working help supplement the income of those who are no longer working is a perfectly reasonable way for a society to operate. And when those now working stop, the next generation helps them out. We all put in, and we all get back. Nothing stops you from playing the stock market with any extra funds you have. And don't believe the smoke and mirrors-social security won't implode any time soon (the government can't default on those US Treasures - or the deficit will be a foggy memory as our economy goes down the toilet). And with a few minor tweaks, it won't ever implode.
And, yeah, it's supposed to have failed any day now for like sixty years so...
Should be any day now.
Plus, "half your check"? You should have that looked into because I think there's something wrong there.
The Republicans have done a great job of creating a self-fulfilling prophecy by running around telling everyone the program is going to fail and then working to try to kill it.
Posted by: John Moltz at February 10, 2005 09:50 AMIf you read the article on Thursday "When math is worse than fuzzy you have to recognize that Americans are being duped by this administration. This term has brought Mr. Bush's real agenda to light i.e. protecting the wealth of the richest Americans at the expense of the middle class and working poor.
